Oh, er, yes, Wriothesley remembered the conversation, and the promise. For some reason, their Chief Justice hated it when Wriothesley had foreign odours on him. And that time he'd threatened to bathe the Duke in the Fountain of Lucine if he ever smelled an omega scent on him again.
Neuvillette is a Prime Alpha, which means he gets to meet several potential mates in his lifetime. He can choose who he'll eventually bond with. After meeting a flighty Duke with a heart bigger than the ocean, Neuvillette decides not to ruin his life. After all, after the bite, his mate's body, regardless of gender, will adapt to the needs of the Prime Alpha. And the Duke is an alpha, too. An alpha who's unlikely to appreciate the prospect of becoming an omega.
But then suddenly this Duke starts courting Neuvillette as a potential mate, thinking that the Prime Alpha hiding his scent is actually an omega. Well, Neuvillette may be an ancient semi-divine creature... but he's no saint.

Wriothesley sticks a finger into his collar and yanks at it. “Warm,” he murmurs as Neuvillette tilts his face to track the movement.
“Heat rises,” purrs Neuvillette against his ear.
Right. That. Certainly nothing to do with Neuvillette plastering himself against his back, or the arousal that spears through Wriothesley's gut as a result. Neuvillette’s chin rests against his shoulder. His hips are flush with Wriothesley's ass, an obvious erection nestled against it.
Neuvillette is uncharacteristically handsy in the rafters of the Pankration Ring.
