“And I think,” Mike tries again, voice scratchy, eyes still locked on Will’s, “that that sort of thing is just- kind of irreversible, when you think about it. And no matter what happens, there’s a part of you that always stays stuck on that person.”
It’s funny, Will thinks, as he stares blankly back at Mike, how neatly it lines up. Maybe he and Mike are too similar for their own good. Maybe everyone does feel it the same way after all, no matter how different they are, or maybe it’s just him and Mike who love this intensely, and the universe is just torturing Will for fun with the knowledge that it will never line up for them in the one way that matters.
Mike clears his throat, blushing furiously. “Um. Anyway, can I kiss you?”

Sometimes he swears it’s all a dream, that one of these days he’s going to wake up and be sixteen again, and he’ll still have a best friend and a warm house and a whole summer stretching out in front of him, and all of this college and career and small lonely apartment business will blessedly fade from his memory. Somehow he still hasn’t accepted that this is what his life is going to be like, even though he’s had no indications otherwise.
It’s not bad. It’s just not what Will expected.

“So you like him?” Max asks, her screen shaking a little as she reaches for something outside Mike’s range of view.
Mike frowns at the FaceTime screen, hugging his pillow to his chest and squirming further under his blankets. “He’s nice,” he says petulantly, and Max’s face pops back into view to give him an unimpressed look. “He’s a good roommate.”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it,” Max says, in her typical Max tone, equal parts vehemence and poorly disguised fondness. “I personally witnessed you DM this guy after like five seconds of looking at his bio post after weeks of agonizing over your roommate selection.”
Mike winces, glancing around the empty dorm in case Will has somehow materialized in the room in the past thirty seconds without him noticing. “That’s not what happened,” he says, though it’s not not what happened, “I liked his vibe.”

The little girl makes a squeaking noise, shoving her face into the guy's chest and bringing her thumb back up to her mouth. “Uh uh. Wanna stay with you, Daddy,” she implores.
Her dad sighs, leaning back against the bench and placing a hand at her back, glancing apologetically over at Will. “She’s been going through this shy phase,” he says conspiratorially.
Will laughs. “Personally, I’ve been going through a shy phase for almost three decades, so. I get it.”
The guy snorts. “Fair enough.” He peers down at his daughter, who’s still hiding her face in his t-shirt, and smiles a little as he pats the top of her head. “I’m Mike, by the way."In which Will meets a very cute guy, with an even cuter daughter.

Summary
This is what Mike’s been thinking about, in between worrying whether they’re all going to die, which definitely suggests that his priorities are a little out of whack, but he can’t help it. The past year has been bizarre, to put it lightly, but he thought that one of the better things to come out of it is that he and Will are friends again, like, real, close friends. He’s wondered, once or twice, in the midst of his own relationship’s crumbling status, whether Will has ever had any romantic entanglements, whether he plans to. Previously, Mike had ruled it out, because he thought if Will was interested in someone that he’d tell him about it, or at least not hide it. But Robin mentioned a date, and Will’s the only guy she’s been around lately except for Steve, who’s pretty obviously still hung up on Nancy (ew), so, like, what else is Mike supposed to think?
Will has made a new friend. Mike feels normal about it, really.
