    Hayden Pike was not a conspiracy theorist. Not even a little bit. Unlike many professional athletes, he had not received quite enough head injuries to be won over by crazies on the internet claiming that the earth was flat or that jet fuel can't melt steel beams. No, Hayden was a straightforward man who believed in facts and logic. He didn't overthink events or analyze interactions for hidden meanings. He was generally content to accept things people told him at face value, especially if those people were his best friend of nearly a decade.
    So when Shane started driving to Ottawa more often, he didn't initially think much of it... at least at first.

    Or: A slightly canon divergent version of how Hayden finds out. Mostly book inspired. Set after Ilya moves to Ottawa.
