After eating Mrs. Wheeler’s delicious lasagna, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max go to Stacey’s graduation party unbeknownst to Mike. Mike finds out, and shows up to the party to find his friends having more fun there than they did during his D&D campaign, and is especially heartbroken to see Will having a good time without Mike there. Mike starts to wonders why this bothers him so much...

Mike kept going, unable to stop himself now, like the admission opened the flood gates. “It’d be so much easier if you were a girl. Everything would make sense. No one would question anything. I wouldn’t have to feel like… like I’m wrong.”

Summary
Mike is haunted by Will, even through his Sophomore year in college. He can't escape the constant reminders of what could have been, one reminder being the painting gifted to him, supposedly commissioned by Jane. Mike, under the impression that Will has moved on, mourns the life he could have lived if he wasn't terrified, if he didn't end up like his father. However, on spring break, the Party comes home, reuniting as they always do on school breaks. This time, the long awaited avalanche occurs.

"You just ruined my relationship! You probably ended it! Don't you even want to apologize?!"
"I don't know what I should apologize for."
"Okay, that's it. We're done, Michael. But don't come crawling back in a few weeks because you want to be my best friend again! You knew from the moment on the tower that it wouldn't work!"

Summary
The final battle is one of the mind, not of brute force, and Mike and Will end up at the centre of it. They need to confront what they've desperately tried to keep hidden before it's too late to save Hawkins.

“Will, please, before I say what I need to say, I have to know-”
The ground suddenly shook, making the tower tip and wobble not just in Will’s imagination. Mike gripped Will’s hand as they held themselves upright.
“Guys!” Jonathan leaned over the top and yelled down at them, “Get up here, quickly!”
Mike and Will shared a look.
Later, it said, but Will had a feeling that time wouldn’t come.

“Will?” he could recognize that voice anywhere, even if it was more slurred and manic than it normally was, “It’s Mike.”
“I know,” Will rubbed his eyes, unsure why his childhood best friend was calling him from Indiana at 4 in the morning, “what do you want, Mike?”
“Come to Hawkins for Christmas,” Will was sure that was more of a demand than a request, “You can stay in the basement, or my room, or even Nancy’s. She probably won’t come home for Christmas, she never does.”
“Mike, it’s 4AM, what are you–”
“Just say you’ll come.”
“I’ll come.”

Will left Hawkins behind for the bigger and better things of New York City, until he got a drunken call from Mike on the night of Halloween, begging him to come home and visit him for Christmas.
Now it's Winter Break, and Will's driven over 10 hours to spend Christmas with the Wheeler's, only for all but Mike to be no where to be seen.

"Will, don't say that. You're not going anywhere where we won't be." Mike interrupts him, suddenly moving to the edge of the couch and reaching out to hold Will's hands in his. They are a little bit rough and so, so, warm. Will wonders whether Mike will hold his hands like this after he knows the truth.
