Summary
Childe had always assumed that he would die young. He had accepted that a long time ago, ever since he accepted the mantle of a Fatui Harbinger. However, he always thought that he would die in a glorious fight, his body broken but spirit relishing the strong opponent that had bested him. He was okay with that type of death.
Unfortunately, it seemed like Fate had decided to add one last insult to injury, because, here Childe was, dying because he had fallen in love with the ex-Geo Archon. The same Archon who seemed to have discarded him like an old toy ever since the Osial Incident.

Those are some of the first words Ajax, starving college student extraordinaire, has the misfortune of hearing upon waking up in a brave new world from what he's fairly sure is a very fatal accident involving water and a shit ton of electricity.
Okay, so he's not dead. That's good. But what's this about him being stuck playing the character Tartaglia? Tartaglia, as in the no-good, one-dimensional, cartoonish villain who met his untimely, gruesome death in the first act of the original game?
Forget this. Like hell Ajax is going to share that fate.

It’s been two months since the storm, and Childe hasn’t seen Zhongli not even once, not since that fateful meeting with the Signora where the truth is finally unveiled.
And what a fun little kick to the gut that is, the realization that not only had he been played by all sides, but he's also being tossed aside like trash now that his use had run its course.
It’s not that Childe doesn’t get it. He’s a Harbinger. He knows first-hand what it means to do his duty, to put the mission first and his personal feelings far, far away, preferably locked up in a box, where it wouldn’t interfere with his job. He knows what it’s like working with vipers, to scheme and plot and lie in wait for the opportune moment to stab his opponent in the back.
But this time, this time Childe can’t help but feel a little (a lot) gutted.
Stupid. He’s gotten himself stupidly attached.

Tartaglia sticks his tongue out and puts an L-shaped hand on top of his head. He laughs childishly, loudly and leaves Teucer pathetically speechless in front of him.
Teucer rolls his eyes. "I didn't know mutes had tongues."
Tartaglia looks at the ground. Teucer stares at the ceiling. Suddenly the end and beginning of the room is the most important thing in the world to the two of them. Until Teucer looks at his elder brother, eyes more cerulean than navy this time, and the latter looks back.
And they burst out laughing. Ajax is glad he's finally home.
(Teucer is in the middle of mourning, and reflects on all the twists and turns that led him halfway to recovery.)

(Or: The world has ended thanks to zombies. But Jungkook chops wood, folds the laundry and asks Taehyung what's for dinner.
It's probably too good to be true.)
