The writing of this one is amazing. Diverse cast of extremely lovable characters with a healthy dose of found family feels. Good balance of real-feeling problems, down-to-earthness and happy moments. And it is long! It is so rewarding to spend time getting to know the setting and the story and the characters.

I enjoyed this story a lot! I know nothing about ballet, so don’t listen to me on this, but it felt authentic to me. Or maybe it is more accurate to say that ballet here is not just some window dressing but integral to both the story and the character’s identities. I loved the found family dynamic. Also, there is just something about relationships between people who also have other stuff going on in their lives. And stories about people dedicated to their vocation in general.
The tone is not particularly happy, but it is really funny at times. While it’s definitely a good idea to mind the tags, I wouldn’t call it a heavy story either. I really liked the narrative arc, I felt like it does a good job of guiding you along the story without making it entirely predictable. I especially loved the main character’s point of view. And I enjoyed the interspersed newspaper articles, which really drove it home again that everything in this story is told from a specific perspective.
There is no need whatsoever to know anything about the original works in order to appreciate this story. -

This is hilarious. I downloaded this podcast to listen to while running, and I had to stop several times because I was laughing so hard. It’s extremely well written and also well read.
The plot doesn’t really have anything to do with Leverage itself, so you won’t spoil yourself or anything, but it kind of lives of the implications, so it may be a tad too absurd (or maybe not as funny? Hard to tell) if you don’t know who these characters are. Also, the characterization is on point and delightful. -

Simply said, this is a Utopia. Basically, the author challenged themselves to write a compelling story where everything that happens is good – and they succeeded.
The writing is what deserves special mention here. You can tell (well, I am guessing here, but it’s a fairly safe bet) that the author is used to writing scientific texts, and writing them well at that. Like the original books, this story succeeds in making you think through the scientific, social, economic, political, personal…. consequences of everything that happens. It leaves you feeling like you learned something and broadened your perspective. In addition to giving you more of Miles and Ekaterin to love, this story also gives you a chance to enjoy more of some of the side characters with fairly small roles in the original series - Nikki and Aunt Vorthys deserve particular mention here. This is not a romance, but the relationships are pretty much the same as in the original books. If you enjoyed the comedy of manners and the political scheming aspects of A Civil Campaign, you will just love this.
You MIGHT be able to enjoy this without having read the books it is based on (?), but honestly….just go read those first! More great books for you to read, yay :) I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. I especially recommend reading this after having just finished one of the heavier Vorkosigan books – Mirror Dance maybe, or Memory – and getting all the emotional satisfaction you could ever wish for. -

I love this story. It is the exact right amount of sad and melancholy without ever crossing the line to hopeless. It is quiet and undramatic without losing any of the narrative tension. And the characters are just so amazingly drawn. Their reactions to events are 100% understandable based on their hopes and fears – there were no unnecessary misunderstandings. The focus of the story is very much on the exploration on the characters feelings. The Point of view alternates between the two main characters by chapter so that you really get insight into both of their thoughts. It is the story equivalent of a Sunday afternoon spent alone, wrapped up in blankets and drinking tea while a rainstorm is happening outside your window. The writing complements this tone perfectly.
The topic is obviously pretty heavy, but the author is really good about warnings at the beginnings of chapters.
