    Summary

In truth, coffee didn't wake Jouno up — to the point he often believed caffeine to be a hoax — nor did its bitterness or scalding heat, no. Because Jouno was stubborn, and it seemed his body followed in suit, the adenosine in his body refusing to stop for the foreign chemical roadblock, dispersing around it like he did with his enemies. Jouno didn't drink coffee for all the conventional reasons; but that is exactly why he drank it. Drinking coffee, something so mundane, it was normal. For a while, he wasn't a weapon for the state, wasn't a hunting dog, wasn't disposable — he was normal. Normal people drank coffee. And though it had no effect on him and he rather hated the taste, he drank coffee. And that was normal enough.

    Summary

The crack in the composure of his victim pleases Jouno first and foremost - it’s what easily draws a content smile from him. (Here, in sex rather than an interrogation room, his satisfaction presents itself in the surrender of trust instead of the aloof sadism he may use to put distance between himself and a criminal.)

Truthfully, while his actions may be under the pretense of belittling Tecchou even now, Tecchou has begun to suspect it may be just as likely that Jouno draws pleasure from the affirmation of his own desirability.

(Tecchou and Jouno on a Saturday night.)

“What is justice?” Jouno asked, the smell of Tecchou’s shampoo irritating in his nose. “To you?”

He drew closer when Tecchou didn’t reply, and fought the urge to touch him, to find out whether his body burned as hot as it felt from the distance, and sold it under the art of intimidation.

“You can’t fight for something that doesn’t exist,” he added, careful to coat his words in shards of ice. He remembered a young man, clawing at his own eyes in the middle of the night, desperation clear in his ragged breaths, evident in the bruises scoring his body.

    Summary

The photographs were a bit incriminating; Tecchou would have to admit that being seen with such sketchy characters would be hard to explain. But he knows that Jouno wouldn't hurt anyone who didn't deserve it, a belief he felt firm in even after learning about where Jouno came from. "What do you need me to do?"

"I need to know what he's doing with these people, and even though we can get these pictures, no one would be able to get close enough to Jouno to find out what they're discussing. Not only are the soldiers all scared of him, but any nearby and unsteady pulse would tip him off right away. But you and Jouno partner together more than anyone else, and if anybody has a chance of getting close enough, it's you."

    "I understand."

(Or, Fukuchi has reason to believe Jouno may be betraying the Hunting Dogs, so he sends his strongest dog to find more out).

Hey, I heard you were looking for a place to stay. My roommate also moved out recently so I have a room open.

    “You’re shitting me,” said Kaveh.

    “What?” Cyno tilted his head.

Kaveh held out his phone. Cyno and Tighnari leaned over until the sides of their heads were touching as they read the message.

Tighnari jerked away. “Al-Haitham sent you that?”

“I didn’t know he had it in him,” said Cyno.

    “Had what?”

    “A charitable soul.”

Kaveh needs a place to stay senior year of college and Al-Haitham has an open spot.
