“Jay was cleared from the hospital a week before Christmas, and of course there was something new to worry about. In the hospital, Tim warned him that a snowstorm was coming, almost unheard of for Alabama, and that it’d probably stick around for a while. Jay had given him a crooked smile, reminding Tim that they’d survived worse. Tim didn't like that joke very much. But Jay was right, all they needed was a place to lay low and wait out the storm.”

After Jay is cleared from the hospital, they wait out a snowstorm in a shitty motel. Jay struggles with guilt, boredom, and his crush on Tim.

Tim stepped aside and looked up from his friends back, and then froze.
Looking in the mirror, Tim's reflection stared horrified, eyes wide and his face draining its color. In the corner of his eye, Jay shared his expression. He stared at the mirror, and then to Jay, and then back to the mirror.
Jay had no reflection.”

Tim was pulled from his thoughts, brought back to reality from a simple sentence. He looked over at Jay, who stood next to him. The taller man leaned on the balcony railing, watching the rain fall.
“What was that?” Tim asked, removing his cigarette from his mouth.
Jay didn’t look at him. He kept watching the drizzle. “I wanted to be a cinematographer.”

The joy he’d felt after beating Shredder had been short lived, returning home to nothing was something he never thought would happen. The ramps he and their brothers skated on, the beautiful pieces Michael had painted, the trophies from past battles. All gone, devoured by the hungry flames of the fight. Smoke and dust rose from debris, dancing in weak beams of the moonlight.
The wreckage was not the main factor however, it was what was inside. In the debris of his laboratory, he sank their hands into the rubble and emerged with purple titanium. He shook, gasping for air.
