Summary
The second work in The Third Survivor.
Seed of Life ended in the galley, on a kiss, with the Tree. Taking Root picks up from there.
The chapters vary in length and can be read as standalone pieces, but they are written to be read in order, and they assume you have read Seed of Life before this. Taking Root is post-canon to that story and rests entirely on it.

Summary
Ryland Grace decided if he survived the Hail Mary he'd swear off adventure forever. A man only got so many miracles, and Grace was well aware his bank was running on empty. Content to stay on Erid with his friends and students, living out the rest of his life forever removed but never alone, he was convinced that his days galavanting off planet were over.
However, when a second moon teleports into Erid's orbit, Grace is reminded all too quickly that some things are simply not his decision to make. In an attempt to keep his newfound home safe, Grace and Rocky track the origin of a singular transmitting radio wave and find themselves face to face with an unlikely survivor, as well as the deadly pathogen he and all of the blood on their new moon carry. Unable to return to Erid after being exposed, Grace and Simon must navigate the newly terraformed moon and find the source of both their mutations, or risk it breaking containment and infecting all of Erid. It feels like an insurmountable task, especially given Simon and Grace's clashing ideas of 'minimal casualties'. At the very least they can both agree on one thing: this time, neither one of them is going to do it alone.

Summary
Between Grace's scant first aid and the nanny bot they managed to get the man mostly stable, tucked into Grace's bed and completely dead to the world for the past few days.
It's the same man currently trying to kill him.

Summary
“I see you.”
Something crosses between universes that should never touch. A vessel built for a blood ocean, broken open in deep space. Inside it, barely alive, a man no one was looking for and a tree that should not exist.
Grace and Rocky did not ask for this. But Grace has not seen another human being in years, and the ruined stranger on his medbay table is, impossibly, alive.
Simon has only ever known one law: everything costs something. Kindness is a debt. Care is a trap. He has no idea what to do with a man who keeps giving him things and asking for nothing back, and no framework at all for the one that terrifies him most: being seen, and not made to pay for it.
