As they all filed in, Daphne shivered, rubbing her arms. "Can I just say , the drive here? Gave me chills. We passed this cornfield and I swore I heard a baby crying."
That made Ricky stop. His expression shifted sharply. "You heard crying?"
Daphne nodded. "Yeah, but it stopped. I was about to check it out, but Velma asked me for her LeapFrog phone, and then... I don't know. It just went away."
The silence that followed was heavy enough to make Scooby whimper softly and lean against Shaggy's leg. Ricky's eyes went dark.
"...You didn't get out, did you?"
"No" Daphne said, frowning. "Why?"
Ricky set the leash on the counter, exhaling slowly. "That's not a baby. Not out there. Not this time of year."
Fred blinked. "Then what-"
Ricky cut him off, voice quiet but firm. "It's an old trick. A lure."
