In the mall parking lot, Steve watched as everyone's families came to check that their kids were okay. Steve figured no one would be coming to check on him—but he figured wrong.

"Dustin's fine," he said, not wanting her to worry any longer than she had to. He blinked in surprise when she waved one of her hands.
"I know." She gestured… somewhere, Steve was too busy watching her in confusion to look. "He wasn't in the mall, Lucas told me."
"Oh." Steve shifted his weight from one foot to the other. Mrs. Henderson's face screwed up in a familiar expression of concern. Dustin wore the same one when he was worried about something. "Then what—"
She reached up, hand hovering over his sore eye without touching it. Her other hand rested gently against Steve's relatively unscathed cheek and his mouth snapped shut with a click.

He blinked, his eyes suddenly begging to close, the urge to sleep hitting him faster than it had ever hit him before. Beside him, the girl slipped closer, settling a small hand on his leg and squeezing. Her nails dug into the soft skin of his thigh, yet the feeling was dulled, like he registered the touch minutes after it happened, like it was on a delay, like everything was on a delay and Harry was existing in this bubble just outside of normal time, not quite here, and not quite there, stuck in the in between.
