It’s the ground-level anchor that keeps families tethered to the earth, so stress and grief don’t sweep them away entirely.
It’s also where she and Jack leave their eight-month-old baby each morning, dropping her off at the daycare nursery and heading into another twelve-hour shift that’s made worth it by seeing her smiling face at the end of every day."

Samira turns to look at him, leans her head back so her eyes don’t cross from how close he is to her. She flicks another quick glance to that picture, and then back to him, before she reaches up, pushes his tousled curls up onto the crown of his head.
Keeping her palm in place, she glances to the picture and back another time, “Huh,” she muses. “I never realized you really do have a giant forehead.”
