And that's real rich coming from the jackass who'd disappeared for days at a time as Sarah's life had come to an end and took off when he couldn't handle her absence after she'd passed.
"Don't you ever suggest that I don't give a damn, Thomas. You don't know what it's like to watch your baby die and then put them into the ground where you have to leave them." His hands shake and his voice is lined with thinly veiled rage, but there's still a wobble when he thinks about her funeral and that too-small coffin she'd been in.
His head still aches from the bullet he'd tried to put through it that very same day.
Another thing Tommy had missed; only finding him almost two days later, unresponsive and crusted in dried blood.

“Nothing’s different,” Ellie tries to talk Joel off the ledge the best way she knows how. “Except that fucking…thing. It was different. It was smart. And I just thought…What if, ya know?”
Joel’s right in front of her. He sinks to his knees, which is honestly for the best before he passes out and knocks his head against the hardwood floors. “What are you asking me here, kiddo?”
The nickname tugs at years old memories, tussles with months old anger. Settles in her hours old desire to be held by him again. The desire she’s brushing off and shoving down. Even if she is going to die, it doesn’t mean Joel gets to be off the hook. All it means is that he’d ruined everything all so she could die in the name of fucking nothing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming instead.
Ellie squares her shoulders as she tilts up her chin. She holds him hostage with her gaze and implores him with the earnesty of her expression. “I need you to wait with me to see if I turn. And if I do,” she pauses, swallows, wishes she could look anywhere besides right into his eyes, “I need you to put a bullet in my head.”

For once in her life, he needs her to listen to him.
"You slip through the wall, and you get Ellie the fuck out of here. I will find you after." Her lip curls into a snarl, fury and irritation chafing her expression. He knows that she's pissed, but they ain't smuggling partners on a run gone sideways right now.
They're parents.
"We don't get to leave, Joel. That was the fucking deal." And it still is. He's trying to get them all out alive.
That means she needs to run, and he needs to handle the fucking hunters opening fire in the direction of their family.
"I ain't leavin' and neither are you; this is just temporary." Hoping like hell he ain't lying to her, he tightens the strap of Ellie's sling and insures she's pressed tight against Tess.
He'll get back to them, and he'll mow down every fucker that tries to get in his way.

Jesse’s fucking dead, oh god, Tommy’s dead too. What was she thinking coming here, he warned her, he fucking told her it was a bad idea, she got him killed, she got them all killed.
“Dina? Dina… can you hear me?” She calls desperately, voice cracking. Dina doesn’t move, doesn’t even twitch. She can’t be dead, too; she just can’t. If she’s dead… what the fuck is the goddamn point. “Dina, please, can you hear me?” She calls again, tears now mingling with the blood that runs down her face. Softly, she pleads, “Please.”

“Makes sense. The town got a list of call signs?”
“Yeah, but it’s for the patrollers. You lookin’ to find out who this Rosette is?” Tommy peeks at him out of the corner of his eye, and Joel rolls his eyes.
“I told ya it ain’t like that.” Joel wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and plunks the thermos down onto the still snow-covered picnic table. “Just didn't know if there was some protocol I had’ta follow. An’ I ain’t lookin’ to find out who she is. Long as I know it’s someone in Jackson, I’ll be fine. If an’ when she wants to share her real name, she can.”
“Alright, just let me know if anythin’ seems off. Like I said, shouldn’t be able to get outside the town walls, but if someone really wanted to, they might be able to communicate from just outside.”
IE: Joel gets a ham radio while he and Ellie are on the outs. Someone answers his call.

Ellie takes a few hesitant steps toward the door before Joel notices it: blood, soaking down her side.
Fuck. Fuck.
He yanks her back, frantic as he pulls up the hem of her shirt. Dark red seeps through the fabric as he searches for the source. “Jesus,” he breathes, spotting the wound. “Okay, you’re okay. Keep goin’.”
She stares at him in confusion, still trying to catch her breath from the terror of being attacked. “What?”
“Just keep movin’.” With his hand on her back, Joel forces her forward until bodies no longer surround them. He needs space to work, needs to get her away from the carnage before shock sets in. With one movement, he sweeps the cans off the large crate, then focuses on Ellie. “Up,” he says, voice low as he boosts her to sit.
“What’s wrong?” she asks. He can hear the fear creeping into her tone.
“I think you were shot.”

Summary
“Tommy would let me have it,” she says, the sentence a taunt if he’s ever heard one. She might not be wrong, really. He can absolutely see his younger brother finding his child playing rabbit thief funny enough to let her get away with it, even if he would make amends later by replacing it. That was always Tommy’s way, after all, causing a ruckus and then doing his best to make up for it later.
Joel wonders how his little brother will make up for leaving him responsible for his child, and the thought frays his patience, already worn thin by being stuck on the road to wander at random.
“It’s not yours,” he tells her, grabbing the rabbit by its ears and yanking it out of her grip. It’s harsher than it should be, he knows, but this entire situation is poking around something that’s settled in more and more the closer they’ve gotten to where Tommy was last seen.
We don’t get to keep what isn’t ours.
