Summary
After Maomao serves as a medical attendant at the birth of Basen and Lishu's baby, a shift begins to happen inside of her that changes how she feels about herself as a woman, and about Jinshi as a man. Meanwhile, the prince remains far away and blissfully unaware that his cat is in heat and the emperor, due to an error in understanding, believes that Maomao is already pregnant and decides the right thing for him to do is to reveal this information to the head of the La clan so they might quietly find a way to cover for an unplanned pregnancy that doesn't exist.

The memory searching aspect of Manacled is what inspired me, and although I have adapted that, (and also made Draco head Death Eater, because... ya know... we all love it when he's Voldemort's right hand man 😅😉), Secrets and Masks will be a very very different fic all together.

“Our strongest whiskey, Sir.”
Sougo reaches for the glass and downs the shot in one go. He coughs, the alcohol searing his throat and coating his tongue. “Another one,” he rasps, sliding the glass back across the counter, and the bartender looks at him funny before shrugging as if to say, ‘your loss.’
He doesn’t really care. Without alcohol, he won’t make it through the night.

Rukia was sitting in his room the first time he opened his eyes after. He does not know if this was a dream, or reality—remembers only that she looked very pale, and that there was a small, black hell butterfly perched on her finger. In this vision, she looked startlingly similar to the girl who used to crouch on his windowsill before school, shiny black shoes and black hair. He watched her for as long as his eyes could stay open, waiting for her to notice him and tell him what was happening. The battle hadn't felt like the deciding, dramatic finale he'd been subconsciously expecting, and he keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop.
What next?
(or, sometimes it takes a couple lifetimes to learn the difference between a love and a soulmate)
