Summary
FRIDA is never not thinking about Fresh Cut Grass.
It’s like… a half-remembered dream that follows them around all day; like the rousing jig they heard a snippet of in a tavern on their journey to Eiselcross that they haven’t encountered since but can’t forget; like the scent of woodsmoke clinging to the fabric of their coat for days, faint and inescapable.
[or: a conversation between FRIDA and Ashton at the Spire by Fire.]

Summary
Light, but this is embarrassing. He is a heretic, he is a traitor and a Beacon-thief, he was once the fucking Shadowhand of the Bright Queen, and now here he is, in a small House of Guidance in the Light-damned City of Beasts, crying. The closest thing to a show of faith he’s managed in decades. If only his Umavi could see him now.
or: Essek Thelyss takes an ill-advised trip into the Dynasty, and introspects.

Summary
Caleb Widogast is figuring his life out. He has friends now, a job he cares about, and can even – on a good day – have fifteen Bunsen burners turned on in his classroom, and not get pulled into the flames. What he does not have, is any experience training other teachers.
Essek Thelyss is a prodigy, one of the Marble Tomes' foremost researchers, and the son of one of the Dynasty's most influential families—he is certainly not a teacher of children. And yet, somehow, he has ended up at a school on the other side of the border, with a list of publications as tall as he is and no classroom experience.
All he knows when he arrives is information gleaned from the school's website, and the name of the person who will be training him—Caleb Widogast.Or: a Mighty Nein and/or Shadowgast Teaching AU.

Summary
It is lovely to see Colton and Calliope arguing in the kitchen, and Clarabelle talking to insects, and his mother trying out new blends of tea. It doesn’t explain why, sometimes, Caduceus will start when they walk too close to him, having forgotten they were there. It doesn’t explain why when he walks into a room while they’re there, he has to pause, because his chest is sore and tight and hurts and he cannot breathe or speak.
(Sometimes, in the moments after this happens, he can name what is happening, or what he would call it if it were happening to a visitor to the Grove: That’s sadness, it’s all right to need to cry. That’s grief. But he is back here, his family is whole, the garden is thriving—so what need is there, for something like grief?)

“Caleb,” Essek asks in an undertone, as they walk away from one window, its festive display festooned in so many colorful sparkling lights that the very sight makes Essek’s eyes water, “if there is something you want to buy, then why not just buy it?”
“Too expensive,” Caleb demurs, the denial so prompt it cannot be anything but reflexive. “Besides, I don't need it.”

Summary
It was still there when he made his way back to his assigned patch. And still there once he’d pulled all the low, creeping weeds from between the thick, woody stems of the lavender bushes.
“If you are dead, you realize I will pull up this weed,” he muttered to it on his fifth pass.
It, naturally, did not reply, though whether due to a lack of investment in its chosen home or a lack of vital signs was unclear.
In the aftermath of Aeor, in the Clay Family gardens, Essek encounters, speaks to, and has a mild existential crisis over, a bee.
