Past the rage and the confusion left in the wake of the betrayal, he had no idea what any of what happened meant for his trust in him.
Though somehow, he realised now, not once during this entire conversation had he questioned his motives. He was a man who acted always for the greater good, busted as his method often was.

“What were you doing, walking around in combat boots at such early hours of the morning?” Nicholas asks him, leaning against the doorframe. “Trying to wake the dead?”
“No.” Vash smiles at him, eyes bright. “Trying to find Bigfoot.”
Nicholas barks out a laugh. “Good one.”
Instead of joining in on the joke, Vash nods earnestly along. “Yeah, I think he is! Some cryptids are meant to be evil, but I prefer to think of him as a protector of the forest, you know? A guardian of the natural world.”
He opens and closes his mouth several times, completely at a loss for how to respond at the realisation that Vash is completely, genuinely serious.
Wanting nothing more than to charm his upstairs neighbour into bed with him, Nicholas takes drastic action: going along with Vash’s nighttime hobby of searching the woods for cryptids in an attempt to woo him.

"But you failed," the Knight drawls out slowly, every word laced with hatred and venom as he steps forward, jabbing a finger into Diluc's face. "You were a little brat way in over their head, tryin' to meet expectations you could never live up to. And their blood will always be on your hands. My friends, and your father's. You couldn't even be man enough to stay at our sides. You ran off like a whiny little baby who just wanted his dead mommy and daddy."
Heat fills the tavern, as if a bonfire had been lit in the center.
Kaeya moves first.
