    Sephiroth comes back again after Advent Day, and this time, Cloud isn't strong enough to defeat him.

    Just before Sephiroth delivers the final blow, Cloud is saved. He's sent through the Lifestream, through time itself, and finds himself in the middle of the Wutai War. Someone like him—a SOLDIER in all but name—is unwelcome there, and Cloud is forced to take refuge within Shinra's forces, led by none other than the young General Sephiroth.

    The two are immediately at odds, with suspicions running high and their prejudices threatening to tear everything apart. They learn soon enough that not everything is as it seems, and that working together might be the only way to achieve their goals.

    Gaia can't be saved, Jenova's poison too far reaching and Sephiroth tied too closely to her Chosen One. Unable to break that bond, she chooses to steer into it. She completes their bond fully and sends Cloud back in time. This time, if one is killed, the other is halved. Cloud can work with that.

    Sephiroth gains knowledge of this bond in vague dreams. A blonde warrior who is a sight to behold, but whose death would mean his own. If he is real, he must protect him at all costs.

    Too bad nobody told Cloud what Sephiroth wants.

    Or; that one time-travel fic where Cloud is just trying to save Gaia whilst avoiding Sephiroth until last. Sephiroth is just trying to find and protect the blonde warrior whose life is inexplicably tied to his own.

    Sephiroth found the package in his mail when he entered his office that morning.

    Which was strange, because he normally didn’t get mail. Well, not personal mail. Or, at least, he never got to see it. Shinra screening tended to be rather thorough after all.

    To his surprise, the package held a... video game of all things. Final Fantasy VII? Huh. Useless waste of time... that Hojo would absolutely not approve of... perhaps just this once...

    It was all going to be fine.

    Yes, things seemed to have not gone entirely according to plan. Yes, he was technically kidnapped, or “rescued,” as his captors preferred to call it. Yes, he was utterly defenceless in the middle of a gang war. And yes, for whatever reason, the Boss had... stopped calling him. Temporarily.

    But it was all going to be fine because the Boss never failed, or lost, or made mistakes. If he could just stay calm, maintain cover and not be brutally killed then sooner or later the call would come, and everything would make sense again.
