Negan still vividly remembers the day that bridge exploded. The air in Alexandria was heavy, tense, full of whispers and terse conversations. Even from his cell he knew something was wrong immediately. They searched valiantly for months but never did find their bodies- either of them. There were never any signs of Rick or his son in the ruins of that ill fated bridge or the river below.

Carl is lost along with Rick the day of the bridge explosion and taken by the CRM. Ten years later he shows up outside the Alexandria gates to find that Negan of all people is taking care of his siblings because everyone else- namely, Daryl, Michonne, and Maggie- have seemingly abandoned them.
