Summary
Despite its bright name, the words “Sunshine Orphanage” were so chipped, faded and worn down on the old sign in front of them that it was almost unreadable.
The building itself was no better. It’s not like it was falling apart right in front of them, but its cracked pavement, dusty windows and rusted gates don’t even attempt to live up to its cheery namesake.
Both Momota and Saihara were left without words. Would they even say something? Should they?
Regardless, Harukawa calmly walks forward a few paces, then turns around to face them.
“Well… This is it. This is my orphanage.”

He stared at the bouquet of flowers in front of his face for a good 30 seconds or so. A beautiful arrangement of roses, orchids and cosmos in various shades of purple were being held in the shaky grip of Saihara Shuuichi's hands.
"Happy Birthday, Ouma-kun." Saihara says with a small smile.
Ouma blinked once. Then twice. Then a few more times.
"It's not my birthday." He blurted out.

“Work?”
Another nod. Maki leans into his touch, cheek resting in the curve of his palm. Kaito slides his thumb down from her forehead to the curve of her jaw, massaging gentle circles into the tense joint until Maki starts to relax into him. She lets out a sigh that tickles the inside of his wrist, her lips pressing together and then loosening with a tremble.
“Wanna talk about it?”
Maki shakes her head no. Her hands emerge from beneath her blanket cocoon, fingertips trembling slightly as they twitch in his direction. Getting the hint, Kaito scoots closer, sliding himself under the blankets too so Maki can tangle their legs as he draws her in towards his chest. She spoons him, often, when they cuddle, and Kaito always finds that endlessly indulgent—but privately, this is his favourite way to be close to her, arms encircling her smaller form, tucking her in against his chest. He’s able to protect her here, in a way he was never able to protect her before.

Kaito comes home and comforts Maki after a tough day at work.

Eventually, Kaito shakes his head and steps backwards. “You should get some rest, Maki Roll. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
It clearly isn’t what he wanted to say, and thus disappointing, but pushing isn’t in Maki’s nature. Kaito would push. Maybe Shuichi would even push, though he’s never seemed to have much of a backbone as far as Kaito is concerned. But Maki can only assume that whatever Kaito wanted to say, he just isn’t ready yet to say it. She’ll wait a little while longer, give him so more time, and hope that it doesn’t run out before he can say it.
Without a goodbye, Maki turns, starting in the direction of her own room. Before she’s taken more than three steps, though—
“Wait.”

Maki walks Kaito back to his room after the fourth trial.

How did someone go about asking for a kiss, though? Maki hadn’t really thought about it much before. She was preoccupied with training and survival, when other girls might have been scribbling hearts in margins and ogling at idols. There wasn’t really a protocol for how to understand your emotions, so she repressed and avoided pesky feelings until it was unbearable. She’d reached such a breaking point, now. If she didn’t figure something out, she was going to maim someone or go insane. Possibly both.

“Maybe,” Kaede admits. She leans in and kisses Maki on her bottom lip. “I’m not gonna lose, though! You know me, I don’t know when to quit.”
Yeah, well, neither do our boyfriends, Maki thinks, but she sighs instead of saying it, shaking her head, prompting Kaede to let out another wave of giggles. Kaede climbs out of Maki’s lap as Rantaro and Kaito step into the dining room, the banana bread steaming and sliced, oozing chocolate onto the white plate they set it on. Kaito puts it down and nudges it towards Maki with his eyebrows raised, as though to say, First pick, birthday girl, so Maki huffs and takes a slice off the end. As she nibbles on it, the warmth and the sweetness of the chocolate and banana settling against her tongue, she smiles, full and genuine, and looks up at Kaito.
“It’s good. Thank you.”
Kaito beams. “Of course! Anything for you!”
Why does he say things like that? Maki ducks her head and groans and pretends like she can’t hear Rantaro and Kaede giggling as she pulls her hair in front of her face.
