He can see the creature that had attacked him now. Dread lances into Danny’s guts. It’s a parody of a horse, its pale skull and ribs exposed to the air, with lesions of glowing red marks decorating the former. Its body seems smoke in places and flesh in others but is everywhere black, as black as a hole in the world. Growing from the horse’s back where a rider should be is the torso of something almost human in shape, impossibly skinny, its freakishly long arms back at its sides and dragging on the stone beneath it, limp. Long, but they were certainly longer a moment ago, when they were flying through the air like whips. It makes Danny think of that Junji Ito story, which he read when he was far too young—The Enigma of Amigara Fault. He shudders. Even knowing what he knows about the ghost world, this kind of thing isn’t supposed to be real. It belongs in fiction, and in nightmares.
