Summary
Mercedes is obsessed with the past and soon discovers that Alicia is too. They set out to do things the way they imagine were done in a bygone era; they read some old books, listen to records together, wear analog watches—their shared love of nostalgia becomes a pillar of their blossoming friendship.
On a one-off whim, Mercedes decides to write Alicia a postcard, pretending to send it from the past—both because she likes the romanticism of correspondence and because it allows her, somehow, to express her feelings in a way she could never do in person. On paper, it's easier to mask that which is otherwise left unsaid.
Later, when she finds a postcard sitting in her own mailbox—also written from another time and place—she discovers that she isn't the only one who finds bravery behind the aegis of metaphor and paper.

There was, however, something else that, perhaps unbeknownst to her, resisted her homecoming—and, of course, it revolved around her, whom she thought was left behind. Who else? But life has an unforgiving way of reminding us when we leave things unsaid, and it would spare Reina not a second of respite from that implacable reckoning.
