“Kiss me.”
Robin balked at that, mouth gaping and a laugh tearing from her chest almost maniacally. But Nancy remained steadfast. She made her sincerity quite clear as she set the bottle to the side and climbed forward so she sat upright, on bent knees and beckoning for Robin to do the same. Robin was never one to disobey Nancy Wheeler, and she dare not start now.
Mirroring Nancy, Robin leaned forward before she lost her nerve entirely. Gentle, soft, and quick, with the faintest smack of lips as she pulled back. Nancy’s eyes dragged open, and the corner of her mouth quirked upwards.
“What are we, twelve?” Nancy goaded her. “I said show me, Buckley.”

Nancy’s brows bounced in slight amusement.
“You keep running away from me,” Robin said, softer now.
Nancy paused at that. “That’s why you locked me in here? So I couldn’t run?”
“Whoa, okay—don’t say it like that. Makes it sound… predatory.” Robin scratched the back of her neck, her eyes flicking toward the padlock. “You can leave if you want. Just to be clear.”

Shelby was Fort Travis’ star Tennis champ while Toni is captain of Hopewell Lake’s football/soccer team. They both make it to the University of Florida on D1 sports scholarships in the Fall of 2021. As the football field runs up against the tennis courts and their classes overlap here and there, the two are thrust into one another’s worlds. As they get to know each other, however, they find they share a competitive drive and maybe a few more things.

Finally, she’s able to get the number in right. The ring is sharp against her ear. Pick the fuck up, she thinks, and someone must be listening, because the ringing stops.
“All right, Harrington, what’s on this week’s nightmare menu? And don’t tell me the one about drowning in your pool again, man, we all know that’s rich kid—”
“It’s Nancy.”
A long pause, then a laugh. “Wheeler? To what do I owe this late-night honor?”
“I, um.” Nancy’s tongue feels stuck to the inside of her mouth, like bare skin on upholstery. “I was wondering if you’ve got a couch I can crash on?”
Nancy finds herself in Olympia, Washington on the eve of the Riot Grrrl movement.
