“Jesus, kid,” the man scoffs. “First winter in Jackson?”
Ellie doesn’t really want to explain that her winter wardrobes usually revolve around whatever people can spare; she’s never had a hat, coat, scarf that didn’t have a hole, stain, or stitch. So she just shrugs before she sniffles loudly, scrubbing her bare palm up and down her nose to will a sneeze away.
"Hold on,” he says before she can get away, and she watches as he steps down off the sidewalk and unlocks the passengers side, only yank out a heinously purple-pink scarf.
“I’m okay,” Ellie starts to say, but the man is already wrapping the damn thing around her. She tucks her chin down and really looks at it, fighting a grimace when she sees the pastel colors have glittery yarn woven in there as well. “Girly isn’t really my color.”
“Coulda fooled me. Your nose is as pink as they come.”
And because the universe is a cruel thing, Ellie sneezes.

"Sorry 'bout that, I might've forgotten to tell Maria that you guys were comin'... or stayin' for that matter." Tommy explained, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Are you sure it's fine? Ellie and I can find somewhere else to stay, we don't wanna cause any trouble."
Ellie looked up at him sharply. "Joel..." she whined. They finally had a home or at least a temporary one. Why was he willing to give it up so easily?
"Really, it's fine," Tommy assured. "It's a big house for the two of us. Plus, we could use some help with the animals."
"Sheep?" Ellie asked enthusiastically with a smile on her face.
"Yes, we could also use some help with the sheep."
Ellie squealed and tugged on Joel's jacket.
One look at her smile, and he knew what his decision would be.
(OR Joel and Ellie are thrown into a world where the infection never happened and only the two of them remember the horrors they went through. They must learn to adapt to this alternate universe and try to put their traumas in the past. But it's not that easy, is it?)
