Summary
Tai didn't actually have the right to be mad at Van for flirting with someone else. Or, letting someone else flirt with her, whatever. Tai wasn't one for semantics. All she knew was that some pretty WHS soccer player was all over her best friend, and Tai didn't want Van getting wrapped with someone like that. That's the part she cared about. Seriously.

Summary
TLDR: Van convinces a reluctant Tai to VANdalize Wiskayok’s “shrine to the mediocrity of men” (AKA the sign celebrating the boy's baseball team’s losing streak).
As the party in Wiskayok woods the night before Nationals begins to dwindle like the flames of the bonfire, many questions weigh heavily on Van Palmer. Like, what did Nat mean by “Taissa’s little plan,” and why is she the last to know?
When the conversation Van has been dreading all night finally happens, it quickly becomes apparent that her kind, caring girlfriend is disturbed and frightened by the events of the day.
As Van comforts Taissa, she has to grapple with just how much she actually cares about her, and what that could mean for them as young lesbians “in the middle of suburban hell.”
Could there be a future for them somewhere beyond suburbia? More importantly, will Van allow herself to believe Tai could also want a future with her?
The night takes a turn for the playful when Van convinces a reluctant Tai to VANdalize Wiskayok’s “shrine to the mediocrity of men."

Summary
Hazily, she sees herself the last time she broke down a door to escape somewhere, the last time she coughed up her guts into the snow. The last time she left Van behind her in the flames.
Tai’s vision blurs as she tries to struggle to her feet, her throat burning as she calls her name-
But just like that she’s there, she’s there with her hands on Tai’s arms, pulling her to her feet, pulling them both away from the wreckage. They cling to each other with fingers and nails and stumble towards where the others have gathered, their bodies like one breathing mass haphazardly lit by the blaze. It’s like that that they all stand and watch, frozen and gaping, as what was something becomes nothing, what was wood becomes air, what was theirs becomes the wilderness’s again.

Their shelter burns. It gets worse before it gets better. Tai moves into her own head and daydreams her and Van from Before, and meanwhile Van gets Worse.

Somehow, this almost feels better than the shirts, like her underwear is some kind of secret armor that no one knows about but her. If Van were to think too hard about it, it might seem a little silly. But she doesn't think too hard about it.
