    Summary

And then it came over me with a wave of peace. I was his.

That was this new river loosed within me. I had always known that he belonged to me, my friend, my Fool, my wielder even. My self, in some fundamental way I could not express. Despite any of our petty quarrels I had never truly doubted that. But I belonged to him as well, past, future, present. Heart and body. As much his as I was my own. The knowledge ran through me with the brandy, and left me just as giddy.

"Why?" he asked softly. "Why now?"

"There is time now," I replied, just as quietly. "We never had that before. Always, there was something else, something more urgent, more pressing, more important. But no longer. Now, this is the most important thing to me. You. Me. Our daughter. My family."

In which the time is finally right.

    Summary

'I sighed, bracing for the words I foolishly and pettily did not wish to speak into reality.

“If I have left you unsatisfied, you might have simply told me about it,” I managed through gritted teeth. “I could have done something. I’m not so loutish that I would begrudge you that.”

He turned to face me again, a noticeable frown marring his soft features. In this light, his downy brows nearly blended into his complexion.

“Unsatisfied?” His tone bordered on disbelief. My chest swelled with an exasperated breath at his feigned obliviousness.

“You know of what I speak.”

“I assure you I do not,” he insisted, but I dared not say anything else, lest I make myself an easy target for his mockery. Suddenly, his head whipped around his shoulders, flashing me a sideways grin. “You mean sexually?”

    “Could you not?!”'

    Summary

'“You’re good at doing that, caring for broken things.” I thought of all the times he had looked out for me, sometimes even snatching me from the jaws of death.

“You’re not too bad yourself,” he surprised me by saying, and I couldn’t help but answer his grimace with a smile of my own.

“I have to learn a lesson eventually.”

That made him chuckle, and I couldn’t be gladder of that sound. He smiled so little these days, it was good to be reminded he was still capable of it.

“I think you’ve learnt more than one lesson in recent times,” he said, and I wished I didn’t preen under the praise as much as I did.'
