Summary
Janine convinces Five to restart a pre-apocalypse project. In doing so, she unintentionally reawakens past pain and present problems. In the zombie apocalypse, nothing stays buried forever.

“Did you finish your coursework prior to Z-Day?” Janine said instead of any of the questions Five had planned for.
Five stared at her. At the very least, this was a factual question. She could do facts.
“Yes,” Five said.
It was, technically, correct. She had finished her coursework. Well, she’d dragged herself through the power of caffeine, late nights, and screaming through her coursework. The screaming in PhD programs was impressively varied. There was screaming because it was 3am and she was never going to get to sleep again. Screaming because the coffee machine had broken. Screaming because in her sleep deprived state she’d impaled her foot on a rusty nail. Screaming (happily) because she’d gotten an article accepted for publication. Screaming inside her head at her life choices.
“Excellent,” Janine said, unaware of the list of screams Five was mentally compiling.

“I’m sorry,” Five said. Her voice cracked on the last syllable as she started to cry. She didn’t know why. Frustration, exhaustion, guilt, terror. All of the above. What would have happened if she died? Sam was still sick. She didn’t have time to be weak, she didn’t have time to cry. “I’m sorry, Sam.”
“Hey,” Sam said. He touched her cheek so gently it made her cry harder. “Hey, it’s okay. You’re okay. You’re here, you’re safe. Can you walk?” -

Summary
“I really missed you, Five,” he said, holding her arms like she might vanish the moment he let go. His voice broke but he kept speaking anyway. “I missed you so much. Five, I—“
Five held her arms out and Sam fell into them, clinging to her and sobbing into her shoulder. Five held him tightly and they sank to the ground together under the shade of a large tree.
“Was any of it… real?” Sam asked, trying and failing to keep his voice from breaking. Five looked away from him. “It looked so real. You- you ran like you. You fought like you. You— you died like you.”

Five and Sam travel from Venice back towards the UK, but the shade of the woods they travel through can't protect them from the lingering effects of their imprisonment.
