Summary
Phainon felt something—or rather someone—shift against his back, warm and firm, and barely muffled down a surprised yelp.
Oh no, he thought, dread filling his chest once more.
As if blacking out and enduring violent hangover symptoms wasn’t enough, he’d also apparently joined someone else in bed last night. Someone else who happened to smell of sweet wine, who left a familiar nose curving against his nape while a muscular, kingly body embraced him from behind.Or; Phainon has some small regrets, and a number of doubts, after waking up in bed with his best friend.

Summary
It was a cultural miscommunication. The product of a cultural difference. Phainon was certain of it. After all, Phainon had hardly been aware of the implications when he first arrived in Okhema. It wasn’t until he attended a class on Okheman theatre at the Grove and they were halfway through analysing a play script from Era Bellica that he was exposed to the symbolism for the first time.
The girl next to him had taken pity and timidly whispered the answer to his question.
Throwing apples was a ploy at seduction.
By the way Mydei happily crunched at the apple perfectly matched to the one he had thrown with every intention for Phainon to catch, and the lack of scandalised attention from the surrounding Kremnoans, tossing apples clearly did not carry the same meaning in Kremnos as it did in Okhema.
A cultural difference over apples leads to some self-inflicted torture on Phainon’s behalf. After all, if Mydei is ignorant to the symbolism then there’s no harm to Phainon indulging in a little fantasy.

Summary
“How convenient,” Mydei said and Phainon realised his mistake, that Mydei hadn’t relinquished his grip but merely slackened it, when another, softer tug at his coat rocked him back onto his heels. “Aglaea really thinks of everything.”
“What—“ Phainon laughed but it was too high and thin, flustered, so he cleared his throat to steady himself even as his cheeks burned. “What is this about?”
“These,” Mydei answered, most unhelpfully, with another sharp pull that tightened the fabric of Phainon’s coat around his stomach and waist. His breath stuttered in his chest for another reason entirely. “The handholds. You have a metal ring. And a matching one on the other side.”
Phainon learns of a unique feature on his coat in the worst possible way: he has an… inappropriate reaction in the middle of Marmoreal Marketplace when Mydei tugs a bit too hard.
Neither of them have a problem with this.

Summary
He hadn’t known Fig Stew was ticklish but the noisy frenzy was reminiscent of the tortuous laughter and cries for mercy of the children who insisted they wrestle to test their strength against The Deliverer. He redoubled his efforts and searched for weaknesses with the singleminded focus of a warrior triumphing over the most difficult of foes.
Only to be smacked across the face by the same rough scales that swiftly slithered around his neck while warm, slender fingers grabbed his chin. Together, they forced his head back.
“Stop,” a low, human voice growled, intimidation hampered by a pained breathlessness.
On his quest to locate Mydei for the first of their daily baths, all Phainon manages to find is Fig Stew napping away in Mydei’s rooftop garden.
Except that chimera isn’t Fig Stew at all.

Summary
He hadn’t noticed his frown until it pulled deeper as Hyacine giggled into her hand and he asked, “What?”
“It just reminds me of how eager Ica was to see you too. That’s the power of free food. The best way to someone’s heart is always through their stomach!”
“Perhaps in the case of poison.”
“Poison? No no! I meant—like how I train Little Ica with treats! Like, if she comes to me when I call her then she gets a treat. Or people who don’t receive much attention from the chimeras will bring chimeras cookies the Garden. That way, even if they don’t have treats, the chimeras will still be happy to see them.”
“You speak of bribery.”
Her mouth dropped open wordlessly, then closed again as her nose scrunched. “I suppose you could look at it that way.”
“I understand now.”
This entire time, Mydei had failed to realise he was treating Phainon like a prized pet.
Food trends come and go in Okhema and the newest one, the chimera cookie, is no different. Before it fades back into obscurity, it leaves its mark on Mydei and Phainon’s relationship.
