There’s a feeling he’s failing to name that turns his stomach inside out when Hans smiles at him like he always does. Unfailingly bright, flatteringly certain, trusting that there’s nothing in that moment that could cause his expression to waver that Henry wouldn’t protect him from. It goes beyond duty, he fears. Hans pulls at his heart just as often as he pulls at his swordhand with his various misdeeds.
“Mea culpa,” Henry murmurs, quiet enough that no one can hear him through the bustle of the castle in the early evening.
