The trajectory of his carefully curated life was changing, like a lost comet ricocheting off the edges of the universe. They said there was nothing sweeter than the siren song of blood, and yet, each time those dark, hungry eyes met his in the quiet, Ten found himself wondering if there wasn’t something else just as worth dying for.

Summary
Because when Johnny says his name, soft like a secret, hoarse with everything he’s never said right, and looks at him with that same desperate, bruised devotion that he’s always carried like a promise, Ten doesn’t see the hospital bed or the mess or the months between them.
He sees thirteen.
He sees Johnny standing in a garden with his shoes half untied and a cupcake in his hand, laughing like nothing in the world could ever touch them.
He sees the old bedroom with its too-big pillows and Ten curled up on one side, hearing Johnny mumble half-asleep that they would still be friends when they were twenty, that Ten would sit beside him in an office that hadn’t even existed yet.
He sees them in hotel robes watching cartoons in the dark, in courtyards at school, on rooftops in winter. Everywhere. Always.
It feels like they’ve never grown up. Like the world outside the room has never mattered. Like it is still just them.
Just Ten and Johnny. Always has been.
(Or: Johnny meets Ten when he was nine years old, and he has never lived another year without him in his life.)
