Summary
There was a draft of cold air, and the gas lamps flickered along the polished, wood-paneled walls, sending warm red shadows dancing wildly around the beer hall. There was a stamping of boots, and then two figures turned into the main room, pink-cheeked and smiling.
Matthias jerked his gaze away and focused instead on swallowing the last few mouthfuls of lager that were left in the bottom of his glass. He didn’t need to look—one of them was the bane of his existence, the reason this mission was failing, and the subject of Matthias’s recent nightmares.
Nina Zenik, in the flesh.
~~~OR: The 1886 AU where he's a Pinkerton sent undercover to bust up the union, and Nina is a rabble rouser on a mission.
Summary
Matthias loves what he has with Nina, it is the best part of him. He loves to see her smile, to see her laugh, to see her eat, slowly recovering the bits of herself that had been stolen by the parem. He loves to hold her, to kiss her, to love her without barriers.
But, some small part of him mourns for the proper way of things, the courtship he should have given her.
It was an odd twist of Djel's hand that Kaz Brekker had been gifted that instead.
Inspired by that tumblr post from clumsyyhearts and insignificant457.
Summary
As Nina tries to process her deepening relationship with Matthias while dealing with painful withdrawal and struggling to use her powers after her bout with jurda parem, Kaz carefully plans to get Inej back from Van Eck, and it's all hands on deck. For information vital to Inej's return, Nina and Matthias attend a raucous party of the city's underworld at a swanky gambling parlor in The Lid.
Nina does her thing, Matthias does a lot of blushing, and at some point they save each other; just like always.
