Hayden Pike was standing there. Next to him, sitting on a chair, was a very pregnant woman whom Ilya assumed was his wife. In another chair also sat an asian, elegant looking woman that Ilya recognised as Shane’s mother, and next to her was standing a middle aged white man that had to be Shane’s father.
So much for you will be talking to the walls. Jesus Christ.

When Ilya goes to visit Shane at the hospital his parents, Hayden Pike and his wife are in the room. Even so, he finds himself being unable to leave. Stuff happens next.

Shane: So, what is this we’re doing again?
Harris: It’s called 36 Questions That Lead to Love. They’re questions that a psychologist developed back in the nineties that are supposed to help couples move past the awkward stage and get more personal. It’ll be fun!
Shane: You always say that it’ll be fun, and I don’t think it ever ends up being much fun.
Ilya: I always have fun. I do not know what your problem is.
[Harris lets out his signature booming laugh, and Ilya grins widely.]
Harris: You maybe have a little too much fun.
Ilya: There is no such thing.
Shane: But what’s the point of the questions if we’re already in love? Like, we’re married. You were there when it happened.
Harris: Yes, but they can help you deepen your connection, and it makes for good content. People love your love.
Ilya: I think we had a pretty deep connection last night, am I right?
[Ilya holds his hand up for a high-five from Shane, but Shane only glares, and Harris looks slightly horrified. Ilya looks back expectantly, but when Shane doesn’t move, Ilya high-fives himself. With the sound of the clap, the screen goes black.]

Shane wasn’t his boyfriend. But for a while it had felt like it. They’d been alone in his house. He’d made them tuna melts and watched TV. They’d cuddled like a real couple. And then he had to go and ruin it. Like he ruins everything. The press won't stop talking about Shane and Rose. He's turning into his mother and for some reason, Scott Hunter is the only one who sees him. And it scares him.
OR
Ilya spirals after the tuna melt scene and engages in self-destructive behaviors. Scott Hunter notices and refuses to go away.

It’s dark, and Ilya’s not quite sure where he is.
His entire body is numb. His shoes are soaking wet from trudging lazily through the snow. His nose is running, and his lips are chapped.
Selfishly, he wishes Shane would fuss over him now. Pull him close, whisper “I forgive you” even though he shouldn’t, because Ilya would never change, because something inside him- in his family line, in his soul- was broken.
Ilya wondered how long ago it had clicked- when Shane had realized that Ilya wormed his way into this country and tricked the Hollanders into caring for him, then returned the favor by botching their language and leaving a trail of mess in his wake. He still can't help but wonder if that will be part of his punishment- being doomed to miss him in death, too.
or: Ilya’s mostly been able to cope with the fact that he’ll never be able to articulate himself fully in this country- but he’s also never been good at talking about feelings in the first place.
"I'm tired" is the best he's got. It definitely doesn't capture what's going on in his head, and Shane can't read minds.

Shane’s eyes scan over the words, once, twice. It’s not true. It’s some mistake. He knows it.
“Lost contact?” Hayden asks, his tone a mix of concerned and confused. “What’s that mean? Like they lost their ability to communicate? Won’t that make landing hard?”
J.J. frowns. “I do not think they will be landing,” he says solemnly.
