Summary
Her brothers are born on the cusp of spring. The weather has not yet transitioned into what she knows as the softer, prettier months of the North Blue, but it's nearly there–the closeness akin to looking at the finish line of a long, arduous race. She is still three, yet now the oldest of five, and it’s at that realization does she gain a sense of awareness.
She’s an older sister, now. She is the firstborn, the eldest, the only daughter amongst a handful of sons, borne from her mother and the man that is her father.
Reiju–which is her name, it’s what her mother calls her so sweetly, it’s what her father states when he wants her attention–stares down at the puny, wrinkled bodies of her brothers and instinctively knows that something is wrong. Of the four of them, three are quiet, suckling on their thumbs and watching her with their eyes wide open, staring, seeing.
The only one crying like a baby is the one that is a bit smaller, a bit pinker than the others. The third son.
She dies and she is reborn with one sole mission: to be a good big sister. Varying success follows.
