“I’m just saying, objectively, I look better than those metalhead pricks,” Steve declared, gesturing at himself like he was on stage, showing off dramatics that had rubbed off on him from being in close proximity with Munson for too long. Steve’s leather jacket creaked from the gesture against the side of the car.
Robin didn’t even glance up from the passenger mirror. “You mean Munson. Again.”
Steve made a face. “Don’t say his name. He always seems to sense it. He might just pop out of a bush.”
“Oh please,” Robin rolled her eyes “You have had every class with him since pre-school, you’re practically married now.”Steve gave her a horrified look.
“Yeah, well, if he’s my husband, I want a divorce. And his guitar.”
Before Robin could tease him any further, tires squealed. A Camaro roared into the lot, drowning out the chatter with screaming guitar. Steve’s jaw clenched at the music.
“Oh not another one,” He groaned, barely audible over the music. But Robin did hear and snickered at his plight.
Then the driver stepped out.

“You hit your head pretty hard,” Carol says, trying to sound casual. “You had a nosebleed too. The nurse said you're lucky you didn’t crack your skull.”
Steve nods, even though the explanation doesn’t sit right.
Because the memories are still there. Flickering behind his eyes everytime he blinks. The laughter, the fear, the boy with the blurred face and sunny smile that ached like a missing limb.
The losers.
The words echo in his head.
Steve lies back against the pillow, staring at the ceiling.
Somewhere deep inside him, something that has been locked for a very long time just cracked open.
And he doesn’t think it’ll be closing anytime soon.
Or my take on if Steve was originally Richie and when he left Derry, he left a piece of himself as well.
