Summary

Summary
After the crew's return to Earth, (former) Colonel Warren Kepler was the one who met the worst fate: a life sentence of solitary confinement in the world's most secure penitentiary. After twelve years, executing the war criminal who helped save humanity is unpopular, but letting him walk free is out of the question.
The compromise is simple: ship him to the edge of known space and put him to work as part of Goddard Futuristics's colonization efforts.
A lifetime of forced labor in exchange for the illusion of freedom. Under constant supervision, as specified in the fine print. Fortunately, it is a better alternative to prison. Unfortunately, his assigned handler turns out to be Daniel Jacobi.

His voice was sweet like nightshade, unlike the cool-toned timbre that resonated boundlessly when they first met.
There was something cold about the thing resting at the base of Sanemi’s neck. It glimmered underneath the dark canopy of the city’s artificial stars. He can feel the barrier of where his skin goes from hot to cold—one side from his hot breath and the other from the icy touch of sharp metal.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you, Shinazugawa Sanemi. I was starting to think that your name was only a myth.”
Sanemi licks his lips as the arm around his chest starts to tighten, pulling him closer to the scent of pear and sea wind. “I was going to say the same thing about you, Starling.”
The Starling is a cold-blooded killer through and through—and the apple of agent Shinazugawa Sanemi’s eye. He’s good at his job; there’s no assassination he can’t do, which means that his entire existence might as well not exist. But Sanemi is determined to find and catch him—for the name of justice. After all, that’s what agents are supposed to do, right?
