Summary
“This is just the version I use. Everyone has their preference, but I can send you the Amazon link for this book if you like,” Shane said, while Ilya flipped through the field guide. He stopped on the section on loons, where two different species were illustrated in wading water and mid-flight.
Ilya pointed at one of the illustrations. A sleek dark bird, with white and black checker-board wings and a stark red eye. “We saw this one today, yes?”
“Yep. The common loon. It’s aquatic, so you’ll always find them near water, usually a lake like we just saw. It’s the national bird of Canada, actually.”
“Common. You can find this bird all over?” Ilya asked.
“Around here, at least. It’s my favorite bird,” Shane admitted. “Pretty boring, I know.”
Shane’s shoulders were hunched up, like he was embarrassed to admit that he was the bird guy, who did in fact, like birds.
Well, that would not do. “Boring is good. I like boring,” Ilya insisted.
(Or, Ilya Rozanov, a newly arrived hockey agent in Ottawa, falls for a local birder).

Summary
So, in Russia, it is not Christmas yet. It is not yet a lot of things in Russia. That’s good, Ilya thinks. Maybe there, it’s still some earlier version of him. Maybe somewhere, in some parallel alignment of days and months, he is still the captain of the Boston Raiders. Maybe he hasn’t been traded yet. Maybe he hasn’t packed up his life and moved continents and switched languages. Maybe he’s still wearing familiar colors, still answering to a city that knows his name and chants it like it's both a prayer and a promise. Ilya. Ilya. Ilya. Maybe he hasn’t become a Centaur yet. Maybe the future has not yet caught up to Ilya Rozanov there.
--- Ilya spends his second Christmas in Shane's cottage, and contemplates the idea of home, grief, and what it means to speak a language.

Summary
"Ilya had loved him through his worst moments. Ilya had helped him find a therapist when he’d collapsed on the floor of their hotel bathroom after losing a particularly brutal game, scratching at his chest. Ilya had held him, even when Shane yelled at him because there was panic crawling under his skin and he felt as though it might claw its way out. Ilya had told him it was okay; that it didn’t make him a bad player to resent the spotlight sometimes, that it didn’t make him a bad teammate to hate the team when they were too loud and too drunk and too physical, that it didn’t make him a bad person to need space to breathe. Ilya saved him.
And look what you give him in return. You’re a shitty husband, Shane Hollander.
You don’t deserve his last name."

Summary
Ilya Rozanov has a "tiny car accident" (his words). Shane Hollander has a full-scale, system-shutdown panic attack about it. Meanwhile, a horrified Hayden is praying for someone to throw him in a lake and tell him that this is all just a big joke, or maybe for a meteor strike; he is really not picky. J.J., on the other hand, is trying to bleach the image of his sweet captain making out with Ilya fucking Rozanov from his brain.
It's a very normal day for the Montreal Canadiens.
