After many months spent believing the worst has happened to his first friend, Syringeon is relieved to learn Case 18 is alive and still prime to be integrated into the Kindergarten's greater scientific endeavors. But the more he learns of 18's treatment at the hands of the very doctors he works alongside, the more he shares in his friend's nascent fatalism.
