Summary
Six months into a grief-ridden exile after Alder's return to the Mother, Tally is determined but not ready to face Fort Salem and the gaping absence of its mistress.
Meanwhile, Sarah Alder once again haunts the grounds of the Fort, restless and ill tempered after months of silence from the person she'd most expected would run to her side. She cannot help but take it as condemnation of the feelings she'd so painstakingly hinted at in her letters, not a one answered or returned.
When Tally discovers Sarah is alive, she wants nothing more but to hold on to the witch and never let her go. But Sarah is stand-offish, almost cold, her demeanor showing none of the diffuse warmth Tally had grown so accustomed to seeing directed at her. The more she pushes, the more Sarah retreats, and Tally begins to think she's made up all the unspoken feelings between them. Thus begins a game of cat and mouse that just might drive the whole base crazy before they're through.
