Scott nodded, never looking up, his own eyes still bloodshot and puffy with grief. “We’re not going to find him, are we?” he asked as he got to his feet.

Murdoch shook his head and allowed Scott to give him a hand up. “It’s a possibility we need to consider.”

    “I’m so sorry, Murdoch.”

“It was an accident, son. You didn’t cause this.”

“Johnny didn’t want to go. He knew something bad was going to happen.”

    Summary

Murdoch got to his feet so suddenly that his chair would have toppled over if Heath hadn’t caught it. “Dear Lord,” he half whispered, a knot of fear lodging in his stomach.

    “Murdoch?” Victoria queried.

“Jarrod, do you know where I can find the boy that was beaten?”

Jarrod looked first at Nick and then back to Murdoch. “At the Doctor’s office I presume. Why?”

“You don’t think this is Johnny, do you?” Nick asked as he got to his feet pushing his chair back hastily.

He pulled open the door just as a young man came down the front walk. “Hello,” he had a charming smile. “I’d like to speak with Mr. Lancer.”

Murdoch cocked his head to one side as he studied the dark haired young man. “I’m Mr. Lancer.”

The young man held out his hand, “Father. It’s so good to finally meet you.”

Murdoch was stunned. “Excuse me?” He shook the outstretched hand without thinking.

“I’m your son,” The young man’s smile never slipped. “Your son John.”

This is a “WHN” for High Riders. I was always puzzled how both could answer in the positive when Joe Barker asked if they knew about him. Here’s how.
