Summary
“The captain was clearly one of those Englishmen who, having acquired a taste for the exotic during his travels and being a gentleman of means, wielded his power over the natives to affect the trappings of a status he had not earned...
...For his own part, Tharkay had long since ceased to draw from the poisoned well the British called love.”
Tharkay and Laurence’s story from Tharkay’s perspective, from Black Powder War through Tongue of Serpents.

Summary
When the Reliant and its unusual cargo are blown far north, William Laurence wakes on the beach of an unfamiliar shore. The strange, magic-wielding traveler who finds him there seems less interested in his wellbeing, and much more interested in what his ship has been carrying.

Summary
There are many ways to find one’s soul-mate, and some are more rocky than others. Occasionally, very rarely, one discovers one’s soul-mate stark naked in the middle of the baths of a dragon covert. Granby and Laurence do not make it easy for themselves.

Summary
If Laurence still felt somewhat guilty of the nearly opulent state of his travelling quarters, he had learned to reason to himself that to make use of it was the better alternative, given that he could not refuse the excessive hospitality anyway, and Tharkay had learned to restrain himself to teasing Laurence about it only occasionally.

Summary
The physician shakes his head; one part sympathy, one part disapproval. It is a disease of poets and concubines. It is obvious what he thinks of a spy who would let himself die from something as ridiculous as unrequited love.

“You know…are you still in the market?”
Loki raises his eyebrows. “Oh, for the, uh,” he sets his hands out in a wild gesture that he hopes somehow makes the mark, because he doesn’t know what an ATV even is—
“Oh, no, no,” Mobius says. He’s smiling, now, for some reason Loki can’t quite understand, eyes sparkling in the sun, soft color in his cheeks. “I mean—sorry, I haven’t done this in a while. That was a bad line.”

Summary
Stranded in Macao without a ship to carry him and his crew to Istanbul, Laurence finds himself in dire need of a guide. He is in luck: two men seem willing to play the part. Only, Laurence is certain he's met them before--perhaps as pressed men in the Navy, years ago? No matter: he can trust them.
And everything's perfectly proper about their relationship.
Isn't it?

Summary
Mr. Tharkay was entirely clever, entirely self-sufficient, and the Admiral was a true gentleman, respectful and warm towards the servants without being permissive, and they were both, Mary supposed, very great men in their own rights. It was only that, when they were together, she couldn't fail to think that they were not in their right mind.
Tenzing Tharkay, William Laurence, and the servants that observe them.

Summary
Napoleon has been freshly defeated, and Tharkay cannot help but feel glad. It brings up a strange humour in him; he, who has always thrived in the chaos, who has never stayed in one place, who has never let himself feel the full heavy ache of his heart; he, now glad to have the war done with, and glad to renew the fight for the estate he is owed.
Looking across the covert grounds to Temeraire and the small figure leaning against his forepaw, Tharkay cannot even lie to himself about why.
"He cuts a fine figure in that coat of his," Granby says. Tharkay, who has always hated to be known, cannot help his flinch.
