Summary
It had only been two weeks since they were last together, but the experience in Saint Denis had made time seem so strange. Mary would get lost in daydreams that felt startlingly vivid and present - Arthur’s rough hands mapping every inch of her, the sound of his voice when he told her he loved her, the last squeeze of her fingers as they said their goodbyes. Then, a moment later, she would try to recall those memories, and they all felt unreal and distant and shadowed in something unnamable.
How long was she meant to wait for a man who couldn’t even ask her to wait at all?
Arthur is stuck in Guarma, and Mary is trapped in limbo at the Gillis family home knowing only what she's read in the newspaper. As they recall the events of recent weeks, they each reminisce on their shared past, and the reality and depth of their feelings for one another become abundantly clear.

The wise choice would be to board the trolley back to her hotel and allow reality to catch up with the wave of feelings washing over her; it would be to tell Arthur she would write to him and then let him make the choices she knew he would always fall back on.
