    Summary

I don’t think I even know how it feels to be human. What it feels like to... care. Really care.

I was built not to feel. Conditioned out of it before I was old enough to understand what I was losing. And for a long time, it worked.

    Then… him.

We were meant to be symbols: the Spartan and the Arbiter, two aging relics of a war. But something happened in the silence between us; it didn’t have a name in any of my mission parameters. It smashed every rule I was built to follow.

They called him “the asset complication”.

They don’t know the half of it.

It’s hard having a relationship with someone your government doesn’t trust.

Genuinely amazing and the end got me a little emotional.
The UNSC being portrayed as much stricter was a big shift for me considering I've been playing halo 3 with the IWHBYD dialogue always on. But it was a welcome shift.

How does that old saying go? Home is where the heart is?

Wash never had a home. He never had a place to grow up or people to get attached to. Maybe he did, once, but it doesn't matter anymore. He escaped from a cell in an underground fighting ring that put kid against kid in a fucked up fight to survive, and landed right into another.

The Blood Gulch Juvenile Detention Centre for Boys.

This time, though, there's Tucker. There's Caboose and Grif and the rest of the group and as much as they all say they hate it, at least they have each other. And now there's Wash, who's as paranoid as Grif is sarcastic and defensive as Caboose is strange. There's problems and insecurities and really bad jokes, and underneath it all, the chance for Wash to find a home.

Because home is where the heart is, right?

    Summary

The Arbiter's initial studies of human culture didn't happen after the Great Schism; he's figured out things about their species through long observation and plenty of patience. He'll acknowledge their new alliance gives him plenty of resources to fall back on when he doesn't understand something. Frankly, he doesn't get a LOT of the customs these people have.

But it's good to increase his knowledge: as a curious Sangheili, he has many burning questions, ones he's harbored for years that ought to be answered at long last. There's only one problem he's got no hope of fixing.

See, he REALLY wishes he could figure out if this 'bond' with his enemy-turned-ally is purely platonic, or he's instigated a serious courtship between them. Chief is being rude in not clearing up the matter but then again, the Arbiter is kind of shitty at clarifying what his questions are.

Misunderstanding is in plenty but were it so easy to understand one another's intentions, then they'd never learn how to become each other's equal.

Awesome fic that characterizes the Arbiter well!! Chief is based off of the authors play style and preferences, which I like a lot, it gives him a lot more personality then is shown in the games.
Also a really good deep dive into the Sangheili culture and it's still ongoing.
Some stuff might be confusing if you haven't at least read the fall of reach tho!!
Also kudos to the Author because how they are writing this peak while blind?? Holy dedication. And they are fluent in two languages I think? That's so cool!!

The most beautifully written fanfic I think I've ever come across.
