Out of the corner of his eye he can see the frantic scuffle of Winona and Frank and Sam and Kodos and the eight little ducklings that followed him through Hell, Their insistent footsteps kick up a cloud of dust behind him. He turns away and keeps wandering, outrunning the ghosts from his past.

There's something alive in Gotham City, something that wasn't before. It slinks through the alleys and across the roof tops. It winds itself around the fire escapes and ducks beneath the warm glow of the windows. It melts into the cracks in the walls and envelops the city in cold and dark. It isn't a bad something, rather an unsettling force that stops criminals in their tracks and provides an unsure comfort to victims. It coaxes struggling people down from the roofs of buildings, afterall that is where the Something thrives and the Something prefers to remain unseen.
