Shadow's never been good at subtext.
If it's not said outright, chances are he won't get it. It's a bit of a curse, really. That he takes everything literally. He's realized this by being best friends with the queen of subtly. Thankfully she sees Shadow for who he is and is literal with him. Others? Not so much.
Or, 5 times Sonic spoke another language and 1 time Shadow did.

Sam’s gaze flickers down. It takes Bucky a second to realize – oh, he’s staring at my lips – and then a dizzying rush of heat floods through him. Makes him feel alive in a way he hasn’t felt in so long. Makes him want to lean in, to see what Sam tastes like, how soft his lips are. Wants to see what noise he’d make if Bucky just - just surprised him and leaned forward and –
