“You know I’m not judging you,” Tenna huffed. “It’s fine if you want to dye your hair! I was just curious.” Spamton’s forced smile slowly withered down into a small frown. He grabbed a loose strand of hair between his thumb and forefinger, spinning it in his grip. Tenna crossed his arms expectantly as he watched Spamton mull over how he wanted to respond. He really didn’t see what the big deal was.
“Fine, yeah, I dye it,” Spamton admitted finally. He gestured at his hair with his free hand. “Gotta have a signature style.”
“Oh,” Tenna said. “Oh, yes, of course!” He laughed to himself. “I’m all for it! It does rather suit your brand!”OR: Tenna discovers that Spamton dyes his hair and it quickly snowballs into something bigger than he was expecting.

He did know that, actually. Avery hadn’t outright told him about it yet, but had left out a flyer advertising the hub’s tournament. He had, of course, assumed that meant the slime hybrid was going to participate. He hummed in acknowledgment.
“And I was…wondering, if uh. You’d like…to come spectate?” The hybrid’s core was pulsing faintly with his nervousness, like there was any chance he’d tell him no.
Actually. On second thought.
“Are you not participating?” He tilted his head. Perhaps the flyer was an invitation for the two of them to spectate the tournament?
“Oh! I- Yes. Yes, I am”
“Then I’d love to”

Summary
Ok so official ages are never said so kinda college au??? But I latched so hard onto the “my mind’s a prison” line and how the king was combined with Bill Cipher. So made me think Derek could be alive just in a coma. Will be happy ending soon trust me. Just gotta burn into it. Multiple chapters because I’m a college student myself with not much time to write the full thing at once.

Derek straightened slightly, like he was bracing for something.

“…and instead of properly instilling fear, you accidentally set up a romantic narrative.”
Avery choked. “A what—?”
Derek made a sound that could only be described as a system failure. “That’s not—what are you—no, that’s not what I—”

The list had nine things on it. They come home with twenty-six.
Derek's first grocery run since the hospital goes like this: the lights are too bright and the store is too loud and there are twelve varieties of bread and his brain quietly goes offline in front of all of them. Avery notices in approximately four seconds and steers them to the crisp aisle without making it a thing.
They spend forty minutes in the supermarket. Derek's shoulders come down from his ears somewhere around the hobnob debate. They name a succulent after the King in Yellow.
On the bus home, Derek asks if they are friends. Avery has several feelings about this.
