Lonnie snorted. “Yeah, well, I guess that makes one of us.”
“You like it here,” Kyle said, not even looking her way as he scratched under Imp’s chin. “You haven’t yelled at me in like three days.”
Rogelio’s chest moved with a deep sound that might’ve been a chuckle.
Lonnie didn’t respond right away. She looked out over the wastes, not really focusing on anything. The sharp rocks, the red dust, the pieces of old machinery rusting into the ground. She was still not used to how peaceful it was here, in the middle of all this destruction. The war was over, and despite everything that had happened, they had made it through. They had survived. Together.
After hearing that the war has ended, Lonnie, Rogelio, and Kyle seek a fresh start in the Crimson Waste. They find happiness in adopting a baby creature named Imp, but while Rogelio and Kyle manage to move on from their past childhood traumas, Lonnie struggles. The mental scars of war still haunt her, leaving her constantly on edge and unsure of how to let her guard down. As she grapples with finding a new purpose beyond her former life in the military.
