Under the table, Pete's foot nudges his. He gives Ray a look, raised eyebrows and tilted head, as if to say "Well?"
"It's okay," Ray says. "It's just... that's Jan."
"Jan?" Pete whispers. His eyebrows are almost at his hairline. His arms are crossed over his chest. He doesn't exactly look happy, or even relieved. "Your girl Jan?"
"She's not my girl," Ray reminds him.
"But she was."

Ray wants to kiss for hours. He fills whole days with it, pecking at Pete’s mouth until they’re both chapped and slick from spit, going kiss-drunk and lax and soupy with affection. He kisses Pete’s cheeks, eyelids, his nose, his chin, every part of his body he can get his mouth on. And it’s not sloppy, sexy kissing, is the thing — or, not just sloppy, sexy kissing, the kind that’s meant to push the moment along to more. It’s schoolyard kind of stuff, just Ray’s closed lips pressing against his scars, dropping doting kisses up the jagged length of skin healed not-quite-right.
Pete’s not really sure what to do with it.
The affection, that is.
Months after the Walk, months of recovery, and things are already spiraling when Ray brings Pete something he asked for a long time ago.

Hank chokes on his orange juice. He frantically looks around before leaning in, lowering his voice to an exaggerated whisper. “Dude, what the fuck? We’re on a college campus, you can’t just say shit like that in public."
“Yeah, well, it’s not like I want to be!”, Ray hisses back, matching Hank’s tone.
“So what on God’s green earth are you talking about?”
Ray sighs and leans back in his seat. “It’s just– Pete came out to me like a month ago, right? And since then, I just get this sinking feeling in my stomach whenever he mentions that he’s hanging out with some– guy. Well, obviously not when he meets up with you or Art, but like, guys I don't know. This Harkness kid that was glued to his ass after his gig? I hated seeing them together. Or when he tells me he goes to the gym with Collie Parker, it’s like I feel disgusted by the idea of them even being near each other. When his friend came to visit, I couldn’t stand being in the same room as them. It makes me sick imagining him– him being intimate with any of them.”
Hank stares at him.
