Summary
Joel’s plumb out of luck, it seems, because running after the dog is the little girl. She’s out of breath, still halfway laughing, and for a few seconds she doesn’t notice him. In those seconds, her face is wide open in a grin, dark hair wild and posture loose. She can’t be more than thirteen, maybe a small fourteen, and she’s clumsy in the way teenagers are right after a growth spurt. There’s a knife in Joel’s chest, the one that’s been there for twenty years, and it twists.
(or, joel accidentally gets a dog. apparently, the dog comes with a mouthy fourteen-year-old kid, and maybe also a reason for living again.)

Summary
Much like the other day, Ellie ends up sitting on the porch steps. Joel’s back even quicker this time. Almost like he’d left his first aid supplies sitting out and ready to attend as needed.
More cleaning, this one hurts less. More gel liquid, this time rubbed in a bit better. And more bandaids, these ones something other than plain, boring beige. Not princesses either, usually the first thing adults reached for when they mixed the two factors of Little Girl and Injured together.
Nope. This guy has dinosaur bandaids.
“Dude, I fucking love dinos!”
Joel’s head swivels up, eyes going from her carefully patched up elbow to meet Ellie’s gaze. She wants to ask him how he knew. She wants to ask to see the rest of the designs in the box. She wants to tell him all of the other things she loves.
“S’pose I picked right then,” he says, almost like he’d been standing in the aisle, contemplating what exactly that might be.
“You did,” is how Ellie answers him, not bothering with a thank you.

The midwest is boring. At this point, the crops are harvested and the fields are literally just dirt, so she spends all her time looking for those sweet cows. But she can’t seem to find any, despite there being nothing but pastures. There are, however, plenty of churches. Ellie ends up marrying her cows twice as often as Joel. After the fourth or fifth time, when the cows are up in the hundreds and she’s had to break out a notebook just to do math and keep track, Joel starts playing dirty.
She barely sees a steeple, a little building behind an old abandoned school when she says, “Marry my - hey!” She doesn’t finish. Instead, she falls into a fit of laughter as she tries to squirm away from the hand he’s pressed firmly over her eyes so she can’t see to play.
“Ain’t no church,” he says, deadpan. He keeps his hand over her eyes. “Oh, hey look. My cow.”

If she’s being honest with herself, the real problem is that every time she looks at those pink stripes, she’s back to that night in December, Joel’s sharp words ringing in her ears, sure as hell ain’t your dad, come dawn we’re going our separate ways, sitting on that window seat with her knees hugged to her chest for hours afterwards, staring at the wallpaper and waiting and waiting and waiting for him to come back and tell her that he changed his mind, that he’s not leaving her.
She knows how the story ends, she knows that even though he never apologized, he did wait for her, he didn’t leave her, but those stupid pink walls keep reminding her that everyone leaves her eventually.

“Happy birthday, baby girl,” Joel whispers, ignoring the click of his knees as he crouches next to Ellie’s bed. It’s still dark out, so he’s half expecting her to roll over and go back to sleep.
Instead, in a shock he should have seen coming, Ellie punches him in the face before she even opens her eyes. “Oh my god, Joel! What the fuck are you doing?” She pauses, seeming to realize that she just hit him. “Oh, shit. I’m so sorry.”
Joel laughs, running a thumb over his cheek and checking it for blood. “That’s alright, kid, I shouldn't've startled you like that.”
Something flickers in Ellie’s eyes, then. That same, unnameable thing he saw on her face when they were fighting in Jackson. But back in Jackson, she didn’t even try to cover the way tears welled in her eyes. Now, though, she blinks, and it’s gone.
OR: Ellie just doesn't think she was meant to be a daughter.

Ellie does not trust people easily.
Which – thank you captain fucking obvious – makes sense, and honestly, it’d be fucking creepy if she did trust people in the snap of a finger. Ellie can imagine it in her mind: a weird kind-of-old man (it’s not David. Not fucking David) offers her a home, somewhere safe, he gives her food. All he asks for is for her to see him as family.
He doesn’t say it though. He fucking implies it.
No, it’s not fucking David. It’s Tommy.
So, when they’re all at the mess hall on Sunday night, shoveling away at their dinners – her, Joel, Maria, and fucking Tommy – she can’t help but feel the need to actually fucking explode when Joel says: “I’ve got a three-day patrol comin’ up tomorrow at noon. I was, uh, thinkin’ that you could stay with Tommy and Maria while I’m gone. Sound alright, Ellie?”

Summary
One of the nurses gave Ellie a pad of paper and a crayon. Make a list, she had said with a hesitant smile, of all the things you’re going to do when the world goes back to normal.
Ellie doesn’t know what normal is. To her, normal is the feeling of her bookbag against her back, weighed down by the familiar heft of a gun, and the casual brush of shoulders with Joel when she forgets about things like “personal space.” Normal, to Ellie, is taking the first watch because Joel gets pissy when she even thinks about taking second.
So, Ellie doesn’t have the best gauge for “back to normal,” so instead she writes lists about things she hates. Clickers and soggy socks, obviously. She’s not the biggest fan of pinto beans, so she writes that down towards the bottom.
"Reasons why this hospital fucking sucks."
Ellie even underlines the title twice just so the nurses that come by the check her vitals know she fucking means it.
