And then Joel notices how Ellie has one fist holding her pants up.
“Ellie,” Joel says, slowing to a stop even as his mind is racing, “baby, what happened to your jeans?”
Ellie’s fist tightens around the denim, her knuckles going white with how hard she’s gripping. “He tried to…” she trails off again, staring down at the snow-covered ground. “But I stopped him.” Ellie lifts her chin up, looking up at Joel with a hazy desperation, “I stopped him.”

Summary
Adjustment disorder: an emotional or behavioral reaction to a stressful event of change in a person’s life.
OR: The plan was this: Joel would get them back to Jackson, and then everything would get better. They’d settle into that house from last time, take a shower, eat some food, get some sleep, build a life.
And Ellie would be fine.
(His plan might need some tweaking).

Summary
Tommy fetches her in the middle of the school day.
Which is really fucking weird all on its own. She’s cool and all with Tommy, but Ellie wouldn’t say that they’re there yet. They’re still firmly in the getting to know each other stage of their acquaintance, egged on by their mutual closeness with Joel and an awareness of their own proximity because of it. But they definitely haven’t reached this level of familiarity yet.
His surprise presence sets off immediate alarm bells in her head, because Joel is the only one who ever pulls her from school early and that’s on special occasions or when she’s having a particularly rough go of it. But it’s not Joel today, it’s Tommy, and it’s never Tommy.
(Or Joel's PTSD is triggered in Jackson and Ellie helps.)

It almost makes him laugh—how this kid managed to inherit Joel’s exact brand of emotional stuntedness when she wasn’t even made of the same stuff.
Part of him starts to wonder how he’s supposed to return to Jackson without her in tow and look his big brother in the eye. Part of him wonders how Joel’s going to make it through losing another kid, even if that had been the point all along.

Joel doesn't have a change of heart by morning, and Tommy ends up taking Ellie to the university after all. It doesn't go a whole lot better in this universe.

Summary
This is a childhood home, she realizes as she wanders around. There are little markings on her bedroom doorframe, each with a date and another number. After a long moment of staring at them, she realizes that they’re height markings. In this universe, in this house, Joel’s been watching her grow up.
A stuffed fox sits on her bed, discolored and misshapen with years of being held. There’s a basket of clean laundry in the corner, and she knows without even thinking about it that Joel is the one who folded it. Her bedspread is littered with neat little holes, like she took a pair of safety scissors to it when he wasn’t looking. Birthday cards from Joel and Tommy and some names she doesn’t recognize are tucked into the frame of her mirror. There’s a guitar in the corner, and she imagines that Joel must have taught her to play.
How strange it is, Ellie thinks, to be surrounded by so much evidence of love she never felt.

Ellie’s not afraid of Joel.
She’s seen Joel do a lot of things that should scare her. Back in Pittsburgh, a hunter tried to choke her and she watched Joel beat his face into nothing. She’s watched him take people apart with nothing but his fists. She knows that should scare her.
It doesn’t, though. She thinks at this point she couldn’t be afraid of him if she tried.
She doesn’t like the idea that she can hurt him.
Or: Ellie accidentally hurts Joel.

“I thought it would be nice if you came over for dinner at ours sometime. It’s me, and my husband, and our two boys. I’m sure you’ve seen them around school?”
Now that she mentions it, she does recognize the name. The Erikson boys are nice enough, one older than her, one younger. Both humongous. Just like their mother, who is towering over Ellie as they speak.
“That’s…nice,” Ellie says, uncomfortable. “But, um. Why?”
Mrs. Erikson smiles. “Because, dear. I thought it would be good for us all to get to know each other. Seeing as Tommy Miller came and talked to us about the possibility of you coming to live with us.”

Ellie reminds him, so much, of his great aunt Tina's cat, a smush-faced Persian who had a gold-edged dish and her own special pillow on the couch not to be touched under pain of hissing. Same preference for a single person, same intensely observant eyes, same tendency to both appear and disappear into thin air.
Same apparent judgemental mistrust of him.
"She shy?" He asks Joel one day about four weeks after their return to Jackson, after catching a single glance of an eye looking at him through a cracked door before disappearing.
"Who?" Joel asks, handing over a glass of ice for the whiskey he'd brought. "Ellie?"
No, the poltergeist haunting your house to stare at me and then vanish, he thinks but doesn't say.

Somewhere along the way, his girl’s gotten to believing that she’s a superhero. He doesn’t disagree, not necessarily, but he still sees the parts of her that are less man of steel and more little girl that grew up lonely and leans in to praise like a plant growing towards the sun. He sees it. Tommy and Maria see it. And evidently, Marshall fucking Green saw it.

“Joel Miller?”
When Joel turns in the direction of the voice, he sees Abby, the young woman they’d saved earlier.
Only there’s something about the look on her face that leaves him on edge—almost like there’s something bothering her, something she’s not saying—that has him rethinking his next words in the space of a second.
He doesn’t hesitate when he responds, lying through his teeth.
“Williams, actually.”

“So another random holiday,” Ellie muses, arms wrapped around Tommy’s lean waist as they ride toward a nearby town. “What’s the point of this one?”
“Fuck if I know. Just one of them greeting card company holidays, I think. You’re supposed to bring your girlfriend flowers or candy or somethin’.”
Ellie glances at the desolate, snow covered landscape surrounding them, and doubts they’ll have much luck finding either of those things around here. “Sounds dumb.”
“Yeah, it is. But it’s important to a lot of the folks back home. Reminds them of better times, I reckon.”
It makes sense, kind of, but Ellie still thinks it’s weird.“So what’d you get Maria last year?” she asks.
“I didn’t. That’s the problem.”
Ellie snorts. “Have you just like never had a girlfriend before her, or what?”
“Had plenty of ‘em, just didn’t go through the trouble of shopping for ‘em. Didn’t keep ‘em around long enough for them to expect it.”
“So that’s why it took you like fifty years to find a wife. Got it.”

Summary
Joel’s plumb out of luck, it seems, because running after the dog is the little girl. She’s out of breath, still halfway laughing, and for a few seconds she doesn’t notice him. In those seconds, her face is wide open in a grin, dark hair wild and posture loose. She can’t be more than thirteen, maybe a small fourteen, and she’s clumsy in the way teenagers are right after a growth spurt. There’s a knife in Joel’s chest, the one that’s been there for twenty years, and it twists.
(or, joel accidentally gets a dog. apparently, the dog comes with a mouthy fourteen-year-old kid, and maybe also a reason for living again.)
