    Summary

The balcony is empty. The air is thick with summer heat.

Michaela steps closer than she should. Francesca's legs part, almost reflexively, for her husband’s cousin. Michaela slips between them and rests her hands on Francesca's thighs.

She leans in. Francesca can smell the limoncello on her breath. Her nose brushes Francesca's cheek.

"Tell me it's killing you like it's killing me," Michaela whispers against her skin.

Francesca trembles. Her need pulses in her chest, her stomach, lower still.

    "Please, Fran."

    "We can't."

    "I know. I know."

    -OR-

Francesca Stirling is a high-powered Manhattan attorney on her eighth round of IVF. Her husband's cousin, Michaela, arrives for the summer and immediately upends Francesca's routines. When her husband leaves for a work trip to London, Francesca is forced to reckon with the woman she has spent years refusing to look at — and with the question of whether she can finally become herself without breaking the man who loves her.

    Summary

Michaela was wearing the red dress. The same one from that night, clinging to every curve exactly the way Francesca remembered. Francesca's entire body went rigid. She couldn't do anything but remember the way it had felt under her palms.

The freeze lasted seconds, but it was enough. Michaela's expression shifted. "So you do remember."

She tried to deny it but her voice wouldn't work.

Michaela pushed off the counter. "I wasn't sure. At the apartment viewing, you looked at me like you didn't know me at all. So I thought maybe you had forgotten."

    "I—I don't know what you're—"

"Don't. Don't do that. You just froze the second you saw me in this." Michaela gestured to the dress.

She wanted to flee back to her room like she'd fled that bathroom a year ago. "We were drunk. It doesn't—" Francesca said desperately.

"Doesn't matter? I think it does, Francesca. Otherwise you wouldn't have spent the past week avoiding looking at me."

    "I have a boyfriend, I'm with John."

"I know. Believe me, I know."

OR: The Cheating College Fic. (Fran is dating John except she kissed Michaela one year ago. She was drunk, plus she's straight so it doesn't count right?)

    Summary

Michaela Stirling returns from four years in India to find the life she fled exactly where she left it, John's ghost in every corridor, and Francesca at the top of the stairs.

She had told herself the distance had taught her restraint. That she could stand in the same room as Francesca Bridgerton and call herself only a friend. That four years and an ocean were enough to make loving someone bearable.

She had been wrong on all counts.

Francesca character analysis type of story

    “Why did you leave me?”

Francesca had long thought of confronting Michaela about it. She had imagined countless scenarios of the fight that would make her scream louder than she had ever allowed her voice to go.

They all contained explosive fights, venomous words, and undying bitterness. A fire she had fed with ire and resentment, at last unleashed.

They were nothing like what she had enabled just now. Her nose was red, and cold. Her boots were wet. Her heart burned with the desire to understand. For a resolution. To be good enough to know Michaela, to be worthy enough to speak the language of her perfectly guarded heart, and even more impassable mind.

Francesca is sent away to Scotland to cure her melancholia.
