Summary
Aziraphale is the only angel with the ability to open portals to other dimensions. The Metatron plans on exploiting that by leading the angels into a new universe at the End of All Things, leaving humanity and demons to perish with the world. Only Aziraphale is unaware of that, believing that he's at the heart of a prophecy where he's to lead the humans to a new universe when God ends the current one.
The angel who would be known as Crowley accidentally stumbles upon the Metatron's lies, burdening him with the knowledge only those who toe the line with Heaven will survive the Apocalypse and there's nothing he can do about it. After the Fall, he volunteers as Hell's field agent on Earth, determined to have some fun while he can. When he finds Aziraphale holds the same position for Heaven, he resolves to befriend the naive angel and convince him of the truth. Not that he wants an angel as a friend, and he certainly doesn't expect to fall in love with him over time. As if things weren't complicated enough…

“Oh I’m sure they’ll be just heart broken.” The man in black steps forward into the doorway of the cell and one of the shadow men steps forward to place a stool behind him so that he can settle, grinning, onto it. “Unfortunately if you want them to find out anything you’re going to need a tongue for talking or fingers for writing, and well…” The man flips his knife casually from one hand to the other, “You won’t be leaving here with either one.”
